Here's what each letter stands for:⁠

A - Asymmetry: When a mole or spot doesn't match the other half.⁠
⁠
B - Border: Melanoma often has a jagged, irregular border rather than a smooth, circular edge.⁠
⁠
C - Color: Melanoma may have a variety of colors or shades, including black, brown, tan, red, or even white or blue.⁠
⁠
D - Diameter: Melanomas are usually larger than 6 millimeters in diameter (about the size of a pencil eraser), but they can also be smaller.⁠
⁠
E - Evolving: Any mole or spot that looks different from others or is changing in size, shape, or color should be checked by a board-certified dermatologist.⁠

They are more aggressive than basal cell carcinomas, but less aggressive than melanoma.⁠

SCCs often look like a rough, scaly reddish piece of skin. They can also cause a sore that does not heal, look like a little horn growing out of the skin, look like a wart, or look like a brown age spot.⁠

UV radiation (sun, tanning booths) is the primary cause of SCCs. ⁠
⁠
Since sun exposed skin received most of the UV radiation, SCCs are most likely to be found on the head, neck, and hands. ⁠
⁠
People with fair skin, light-colored hair, and blue or green eyes are at higher risk of developing SCC. ⁠
⁠

Mohs surgery: A surgical technique that minimizes the amount of healthy tissue that’s cut out. Great for sensitive areas like the face! 🔪⁠

Excision: The entire tumor is cut out including a surrounding edge of healthy skin. 🔪⁠

Curettage and electrodesiccation: The tumor is scraped away with a sharp tool (curettage) and then electric current destroys any remaining cancer cells (electrodesiccation).⁠

Radiation therapy: high energy x-rays are used to kill cancer cells. 🩻⁠

Topical medications: Creams or gels containing imiquimod, fluorouracil, which are applied to the skin.⁠
