Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most 2nd comm Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most 2nd common form of skin cancer.⁠ ⁠ SCC are a most common type of skin cancer, but also one of the most treatable if caught early! ⁠ ⁠ They are more aggressive than basal cell carcinomas, but less aggressive than melanoma.⁠ ⁠ SCCs often look like a rough, scaly reddish piece of skin. They can also cause a sore that does not heal, look like a little horn growing out of the skin, look like a wart, or look like a brown age spot.⁠ ⁠ UV radiation (sun, tanning booths) is the primary cause of SCCs. ⁠ ⁠ Since sun exposed skin received most of the UV radiation, SCCs are most likely to be found on the head, neck, and hands. ⁠ ⁠ People with fair skin, light-colored hair, and blue or green eyes are at higher risk of developing SCC. ⁠ ⁠ SCC may be common, but it's often overlooked. Great for sensitive areas like the face! 🔪⁠ ⁠ Excision: The entire tumor is cut out including a surrounding edge of healthy skin. 🔪⁠ ⁠ Curettage and electrodesiccation: The tumor is scraped away with a sharp tool (curettage) and then electric current destroys any remaining cancer cells (electrodesiccation).⁠ ⁠ Radiation therapy: high energy x-rays are used to kill cancer cells. 🩻⁠ ⁠ Topical medications: Creams or gels containing imiquimod, fluorouracil, which are applied to the skin.⁠ ⁠ Treatment is individualized and curated for each patient.
